The two jewels of Barbastro

Back in the Palace Square, this time we visited the Cathedran an its Tower, which is separated from the main building.

The tower was an old mosque minaret and it was rebuilt as a bell tower after the Reconquest. In 1610 the architect Pedro Ruesta restored it. Its functions were civil, religious and defensive, and even served as a refuge on several occasions.

We could enjoy the gorgeous structure while walking up the stairs and the awsome view of Barbastro from the very top.

After the tower, we visited the Cathedral, which was built in the place where the mosque was sited. It’s among the most beautiful renaissance churches, with its ribbed vaults, decorated with 485 splendid “roses” that give it the appearance of a starry sky. It also has several chapels and three altarpieces: the main one and the altarpiece of Saint Raymond and the altarpiece of Sant Peter.
